Sreemangal, the tea
capital of Bangladesh, is basically a picturesque hilly area covered with tea
estates, large forests, lemon orchards and pineapple gardens. A large portion
of the world’s top quality tea is grown here and exported to different
countries. For miles around, tea estates from a perennially green mat on the
pitched hills. Besides its fame for tea, Sreemangal is famous for its exclusive
natural beauty, Haor, forests, fisheries and wildlife, which makes it an
important eco-tourism destination for the visitors.
Sreemongal, an upazila
under Moulvibazar district with an area of 450.74sq km, is bounded by sadar
upazila on the north, Indian Tripura state on the south, Kamalganj upazila on
the east and Chunarighat and Bahuball upazilas on the west. It is about 150 km
north-east of Dhaka and 75 km south of sylhet. The climate of this area is
temperate and cool with clean and crisp air in winter. It is moderately warm in
summer but has an annual rainfall of 5000mm, the highest in the country. Most
of the tea produced in Bangladesh comes from this area. One can stroll along
the tea estates to learn about the process that culminates in one’s morning
tea. Large rubber gardens and lakes of Sreemangal install peace and tranquility
into this region which attracts visitors.
Choumohona is the
centre of Sreemangal town. Here you will find several hotels to stay. Tea
resorts are also available there. To avail tea resorts, booking is mandatory
and it cost around Tk 5000 for a 3 rooms bunglow. Normal hotel is not bad for a
2 or 3 day stay. You will find there AC an non AC rooms at a cheap rate.
Lowachara Rain Forest
is a key attraction to the tourist which is located only 8 kilometres east of
Sreemangal bazaar. Lawachara Rain Forst is also known as Lawachara National
Park. Over 460 different species of birds, mammals and reptiles exist in the
forest.
One can also travel
satchari Forest which is located about 60km southwest of Sreemangal. The
satchari National Park was formerly known as Telepara Forest Reserve. Though it
is less popular than lawachara, Satchari National Park is a tropical forest
with a higher diversity of plants and animals compared to Lawachara, and with
far less human disturbance.
Besides, there are
Haors where plenty of birds- indigenous and migratory- are visible between
December and March. Occasional presence of lemon orchards, pineapple gardens
and rubber plantation makes it a perfect place to travel.
