A attractive scenic beauty: Madhabkundo waterfall

The waterfall at Madhabkundo is the largest of its kind in the country and one of the most dazzling natural tourist spots. During the rainy season torrent of crystal clear water gush down the hill making the spot a place of stunning beauty. The falls is located at Kataltholi-Patheria hill under kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar district under Sylhat Division in Bangladesh. Every year a large number of tourists visit the place for a change in their monotonous and busy life.

Fall of water in torrents form a height of 200ft is really eye-catching. The waterfall full of water lilies and surrounded by lush green tea gardens in an exceptional one. Furthermore, rubber plantation and lemon orchard around the spot have added colour to the beautiful landscape. The journey to Madhabkunda itself exhilarating. On the way, you can enjoy to your heart’s content the greenish beauty of teagardens, the hills and the zigzag roads through the hills. Besides the natural scenery, one of the great attractions of Madhabkunda is khashia polli(village). Khashia is one of the tribes of Bangladesh the migrated first presumably from Tibet to Assam about five hundred years ago and then to this country. Now the khasia people form one of the major matriarchal tribes in Bangladesh. Khasias  call their village punjis where they live in clusters of houses within the cultural boundary of their own community.

Generally the tourism period begins with the onset of the rainy season when the water fall assumes a more attractive look. But, remain assured, the scenic beauty will offer you great charm throughout the year.

Both trains and buses will take you to Madhabkunda. It is about 5km away from Dakshinbag railway station on the Kulaura-Shahbajpur track and at a distance of 350km from Dhaka city. The distance of the Madhabkunda spot form sylhet Sadar is about 72km. while it is about 70 km. from Moulvibazar. One can start journey by train from Dhaka and reach Kulaura station. Then renting a gas-fired auto rickshaw one can easily reach the destination. This will be the easiest and cost effective way of reaching the spot. One can also reach the spot directly, renting microbus or such other vehicles.

A three wheeler from kulaura station can be rented at a cost Taka 400-450 to reach kataltholi Bazar and then an additional Taka 150-450 to reach Kataltholi Bazar and an additional taka 150-160 to the spot.

A Parjatan Corporation Motel with a good restaurant will offer visitors an enjoyable stay. One can also stay at a district council bungalow in close proximity to the spot. All you need is to ensure a prior booking for the Bunglow from the Moulvibazar Zilla Parishad Office.

Tourists may have the thrill of bathing and swimming in the cold and crystal clear water of the falls but they should not forget the great risk involved which may even lead to death.

Defying the risk, some tourists on certain occasions ventured to climb the 200ft hill. These so far led to the deaths of as many as 20 people either falling from the hills or drowning in the ditch of the waterfall. Visitors should take great care!

Currently a beautiful eco-park has been made around the Madhabkuna area as an additional attraction for tourists. Earlier the road form kathaltoli to Madabkunda was in a very dilapidated condition; it has been made smooth to allow an easy and comfortable journey.
